How to check local freebies safely in Bedfordshire and Cambridge
Free sofas, bikes, garden tools, food and baby kit are given away every day around Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Reuse is good for your wallet and for the planet, but a few simple checks keep it safe.
Where to find local freebies
- Freegle and Freecycle. Community reuse networks with local groups across the UK. Search for the group covering your town.
- Olio. An app for sharing surplus food and household items with neighbours.
- Facebook Marketplace and local Facebook groups. Filter Marketplace by "Free" and set your location and distance.
- Nextdoor. Neighbourhood posts often include free items and local events.
- Local libraries, community centres and council websites. Good for free events, repair cafes and family activities.
We post useful local freebies and offers in our Bedfordshire and Cambridge freebies section.
Avoid the common scams
- Never pay a "delivery fee" or "deposit" for something advertised as free. This is one of the most common scams on local listing sites.
- Do not share bank details, card numbers or one-time codes with someone giving something away. Nobody needs them to hand you an item.
- Be wary of a story that changes, pressure to decide quickly, or a request to move the conversation to another app.
- If it seems too good to be true (a free new iPhone, a free car), it almost certainly is.
Collect safely
- Arrange collection in daylight and tell someone where you are going.
- Take a friend for anything heavy, and measure the space (and your car) before you go.
- You do not have to go inside someone's home. It is fine to ask for the item to be left outside or at the door.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, leave.
Check the item before you take it
Electricals. Look for damaged cables, scorch marks, loose plugs or missing covers. Check the make and model against product recall lists, such as the UK government's product safety alerts and recalls page at gov.uk and the recall checker run by the charity Electrical Safety First. If in doubt, have it tested before use.
Upholstered furniture. Sofas, armchairs and mattresses sold in the UK should carry a permanent label showing they meet the furniture fire safety regulations. If the label has been removed, think twice.
Baby and child items. Many safety charities advise against second-hand child car seats unless you know their full history, because a seat that has been in a crash may be damaged in ways you cannot see. The Lullaby Trust recommends using a new mattress for each baby where possible. Check cots, high chairs and prams for missing parts, sharp edges and recalls.
Food. On food sharing apps, "best before" dates are about quality, while "use by" dates are about safety. Do not eat food after its use by date, and check how it has been stored.
Giving things away
If you are the one giving, describe the item honestly (including faults), never accept payment for "free" items, and do not share your full address until you have arranged a time. For anything electrical, say if it has not been tested.
